Year 1

Welcome to Year 1.  We are lucky enough to be based in the school’s newest classrooms which back onto the Key Stage 1 field affording direct access to outdoor learning. The outside area is soft astro-turf which means no mud and guaranteed all weather use.

Year 1 is made up of Owls and Robins.  Mrs Higman is the class teacher for Owls and is supported by Mrs Walker - Teaching Assistant (TA).  Miss Robertson is the class teacher for Robins and is supported by her TA, Mrs Osborne.

In Year 1 we aim to build on the children’s experiences from Reception ensuring that they continue to have opportunities to learn through play as well as more formal aspects of learning.

A lot of the children’s learning comes through role play, with a corner of the classroom set aside for the children to pretend to be working, be it in a doctor's surgery; a post office, a green grocers and so on.

We continue to share many picture books with the children and also look to focus on a specific story a fortnight so the children can really be immersed within the story.  The children are given many opportunities to use all their senses in their learning through activities like bread making for The Little Red Hen story, which takes place alongside the story telling which the children will deliver themselves.

We have many exciting topics including looking at Toys (past and present).  It’s always great to see the awe and wonder etched on the faces of the children when they see the toys that we used to play with as kids!  Barnaby Bear helps us teach about places at home and abroad including looking at forms of travel and the weather.

A lot of time is spent considering what it means to be healthy and also how to manage oneself including learning how to take praise and criticism; celebrating differences and so much more.

There are plenty of opportunities for physical activity including learning skills to play games; dance; gymnastics and music aplenty.

We look forward to welcoming you in person to Year 1.
