The Curriculum
We believe that children should have the opportunity to do as many of the following as possible in all areas of the curriculum:-
- produce original ideas
We also believe that by the end of primary school children should be confident, articulate, literate and numerate as well as proficient in the use of ICT. Our curriculum provides interesting experiences to engage children and provide relevance for the work they produce. There is a daily emphasis on the development of the basic skills children need in order to be able to study independently and produce work of a high standard.
Early Years Curriculum
In Reception the children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum with Early Learning Goals in:-
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
We place equal emphasis on each of the six areas of learning, ensuring that children have a well-rounded base on which to grow. As a result, children coming out of our Reception classes are confident, independent and resourceful. ‘Children behave well, socialise with others, and show a keen interest in all that they do. They chat confidently and read and write with enthusiasm’. (Ofsted May 2009)
National Curriculum
From Year 1 onwards the following subjects are taught:-
- English
Children also cover aspects of Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship throughout the school.
Where possible and relevant, teachers look for links between subject areas with creativity weeks a key feature of the school. These enable the children to become fully immersed in a specific aspect of learning. Recent examples have included weeks focused on Poetry and Art.
Copies of our Assessment for Learning, Teaching for Learning and Curriculum Policies are available from the school office, on request.
We are fortunate in being able to offer a wide range of clubs to children of different ages. All of our children are welcome at Saturday Football, which is run by parents. During the week, a variety of sports are available before
Extra-Curricular Enrichment Opportunities
children participate in at least one of these clubs. Classes also go on day or residential trips, or have special visitors such as theatre groups coming in to inspire learning. Voluntary donations are requested to pay for these additional activities.
School Council
Each year one child per class is elected to the School Council. They participate in debating issues which are relevant to children and aim to bring the views of their peers to the ears of the Leadership Team and Governing Body. They have in the past worked on plans for the Outdoor Learning Project and for making lunchtimes more enjoyable. Consulting children of all ages is an important aspect of the work of the school and this year they are leading our school wide ‘Supporting Charities’ project.
Music Lessons
In Year 4 all children learn an orchestral instrument such as flute, clarinet or trumpet. There is no cost for this, but we ask for a voluntary contribution of £10 per term to help pay for the additional staff needed. Extra-curricular instrumental lessons are available in school, provided by a team of peripatetic staff from Surrey Arts at an additional cost to parents.
