United Against Bullying

Every year, schools up and down the country spend a week in November shining a spotlight on bullying.  The aim of  anti-bullying week is to ensure that children know: what bullying is; what to do if they, or someone they know is being bullied and also to ensure that we are all united against bullying.
The novelty of Odd Socks Day, which we  marked in school on Monday, offered a platform for conversations around difference.  Teachers across the school spent time considering bullying with their classes.  Year 2 shared the wonderful book - ‘All are welcome’ by Alexandra Penfold with their classes.  The book follows a group of children through a school day, where everyone is welcome, no matter their race, religion or background.

In assemblies with Years 3, 4 and 5, we talked about the actions that we can all take to ensure that everyone in our community feels included.  The jigsaw image below illustrates some of the ideas put forward by our Year 5 children which were discussed and considered.
It is essential for us as adults, to keep an open mind to the fact that all children (including our own) may make mistakes.  Occasionally, they may say something that is unkind or upset someone else and it is important that they learn, with support and role modelling from adults, to take responsibility for their actions by being honest when they make a mistake, ensure that they put it right and learn from this.
I am confident that in our school community everyone is committed to standing together, united against bullying.  JK
