Reading at the heart of every child’s education

I am sure you are aware of our commitment as a school to putting reading at the heart of every child’s education. Fostering a love of books and learning how to read is best achieved by school and home working together.  Unfortunately, at the moment, most of our children are working at home and are therefore unable to access the range of books we have in school.

We understand that access to suitable will be harder at this time for many families.  Here are a few
suggestions that might help.

Oxford Owl – a great free resource with books levelled by colour bands

Oxford Owl offers a free eBook library for children ages 3-11.  You can access the correct book level for your child by using the drop down menu and choosing the colour band your child is reading in school.  There are also activities linked to the books.

Surrey Libraries – a range of books for children to share or read alone

If you are not a member of Surrey Libraries, you can register online and access a wide range of books for children (and adults).

If you are already a member of a library, you can download the RBdigital app to access books online:

Book Trust  - most suited for children in YR, Y1 & Y2

A limited selection of picture books for you to read online or watch with signing plus some games.

We appreciate that balancing work and home schooling can be challenging for some families but reading regularly will really help your child to make progress and can be a really enjoyable experience.

We recognise that the children are probably having quite a lot of screen time at the moment and that many of us prefer to actually hold a book.  There are many online retailers that have a vast selection of children’s books available at very reasonable prices.  Surrey Libraries are also offering a click and collect service at some locations.

Please contact your child’s class teacher if you need any support with your son/daughter’s reading or are after ideas for books that your child might enjoy.
